HEDWIGLA JANKOWSKI was born October 9, 1873 in Sebastyanowo, Poland, the 10th child of CONSTANTIN JANKOWSKI and BARBARA FRACKOWIAK. Sebastyanowo is a very small village adjacent to Charlub. I'm not sure why her birth record shows Sebastyanowo rather than Charlub. It is possible that Sebastyanowo annexed Charlub, or it is possible that the family had actually moved from Charlub to Sebastyanowo. At any rate, Hedwigla was baptized in the Catholic Church in Mchy, Poland on October 11, 1873.
Hedwigla immigrated to America in 1889, along with several family members, departing from Bremen, Germany, and arriving in Baltimore on September 12th aboard the S.S. Rhein. She was 15 years old at the time.
The Jankowski's made their way to Rolling, Wisconsin, near Antigo, where they bought land and took to farming. At the age of 19, Hedwigla married Andrew Pawlak on October 3, 1893 in Antigo, Wisconsin. Andrew had immigrated to the United States on October 24, 1888, arriving in Baltimore from Bremen, Germany. He was the brother of Ignatz Pawlak, who had already married Hedwigla's sister Francisca earlier in 1893.
Andrew and Hedwigla settled on a farm off County Trunk "G" in Rolling, on land which was part of the original Jankowski homestead. The couple had 3 children, one of which died at a young age. Two sons, Albert and David, lived long, full lives into the 1970's.
Sadly, both Hedwigla and Andrew died at relatively young ages. Hedwigla died first, on October 16, 1916 at the age of 43. She is buried in Antigo's Queen of Peace Cemetery. Following her death, Andrew remarried. His second wife's name was Pelagia, as noted in the 1930 census. I have not yet been able to find her last name. Andrew died in Antigo on January 16, 1925, aged 51 years.
